Cassy quote: I've never been so happy to see those three words "Tires, tires, tires."

Context: Walk to the Walmart that's two miles or so away.

Monday, April 26, 2004

And the sun is warm in Eugene! It's a beautiful day that I'm not getting to enjoy... First classes and now having to work... I have to clean my room for roomchecks, and do homework tonight. Maybe I'll be able to slip the shorts on and do some homework outside after cleaning. That would be nice.

I am itching to get back to full time work. Jim V. got a job at a call center for Symantech and says that it's a great job. With my call center experience I'm really hoping to get a job there. $11 an hour is going to be very handy. But I need to sit down and work on my resume. It hasn't been updated in ages and I've worked at BK and here in the lab since then. Meh. For some reason the existing document doesn't want to be edited, so I have to start from scratch, and I haven't. *sniffs* Must up the priority on that since April is almost over...

This weekend was interesting. I've been very lazy and lack-a-daisical. Cassy helped me with my car on Saturday, but we ran into issues getting two of the bolts off. She's going to talk to the maintainence guy about getting an electric rachet (or whatever) to remove those bolts. We also need to get some sealant for the gasket. I did get the new water pump though and it'll be easy to put on once we get the old one removed. Hopefully by Wednesday I'll be driving my car again.

If you haven't read Paradise Lost, you really should. The images that he conjures up are amazing!

I had my interview last friday for the RA position. Don't have a clue whether I got it or not. They were very hard to read. I know I'll definitely have to work on time managment and relationship management if I do get this job.

I really need to return some calls... I watched movies on Saturday and three people were trying to get ahold of me. Sorry, I just didn't feel like talking - mostly 'cause of my mood. I wouldn't have had much to say. (Liz was the only one who I actually talked to and she can attest to the fact that I had a hard time talking. *grins*)

Oh, I got 100% on my Pysch test!!!! missed 6 pts but made them up in the extra credit. (that's why I do extra credit!)

Thursday, April 22, 2004

Okay, since the last few posts have been quite silly, I think it's time for some seriousness...

Prayer

  1. Interview - No, not for a summer job, but for the RA position. I asked Brandon when they were going to interview the candidates and he told me tomorrow at 3:30pm. So I get to close the lab and go interview. 5 guys applied so we shall see what happens. If God wants it, I'm good with that, if not I'm good with that too.

  2. Steve and Liz - I know a lot of you don't know them, but I just got done with talking with Steve and they need prayer for wisdom. Tough decisions and they're finding it's hard to please everyone. Just pray.

  3. Spiritual Life - Again my walk with God is having issues. I keep having problems with keeping a devotional time up and barely pray. 'Preciate prayer.

  4. Time Management
  5. - I'm finding I stay up way too late and have a horrible time waking up. Doesn't help to wake up 10 minutes before class. Especially when I am fighting allergies and am extremely groggy for Greek class. I'm also putting off homework until the last minute. Not good, not good at all.

Classes

  1. Intro to Lit - Read Everyman and Othello so far. I enjoyed them, though the language was a bit too stiff for my taste. Stories were good and I did well on the questions she had for us. We had the Midterm yesterday and it went okay. Her tests are always harder. Oh well, I'm not too worried.

  2. General Psychology - Another class with a midterm... Didn't do too badly, and I'm getting the knowledge assimilated.

  3. Small Group Dynamics - This class rocks! We're reading a great book and the discussion is awesome! We've even done some breaking up into small groups and dealing with problems. What's cool is we're going to be given actual problems from the administration to solve for our project. it's going to be a blast!

  4. Greek - We're to the end of most of the things to learn. We're working on translating First John. Problem is, I'm having a really hard time with concentrating on the things I need to...

Well, G'night. Have a wonderful weekend.

I open this log with the knowledge that my hours are numbered. 0 through 24. 24 down to 0. Why must this be? Why must every hour be numbered, even though I be but mortal? I know not why I must be tormented so! Mayhap it is because I turned Veggie Tales’ tune on and sang to them. If that be so, I so formally repent. May that said event never happen again. But wait! The hours are still numbered! What must I do to remove said numbers?! If it requires torture, I shall be tortured! If it requires a quest to the ends of the earth, I shall embark on that quest! If it requires listening to hours and hours of Country Music, I shall…. *strikes pose* Wait, eh… Never mind, it’s not that important.

Companion Quote of the Day

When we emerged from HEL this afternoon, we discovered that the forecasted shower had indeed arrived, and it was refreshing after several days of sweltering humidity.

*grins*

BTW, HEL stands for History of the English Language.

Quote of the day:

Yesterday, HEL was pleasant because we had it outside, at the tables in the library courtyard.

So what do you do when a water pump is needed? You rob a bank. That was my day today... I went to church this morning, realized I needed money so I stopped by Umpqua Bank and asked the one guy for money. He of course denied me. So I hypotized him. He then gave me a million dollars. I then bought a Lear Jet and flew to Cali to buy a Limo. I then crashed the Limo on Alcatrez. I came back to the campus and painted the dorms red. *winks*

Then I realized I didn't have a water pump, so I went to the local water resivor and jacked a water pump onto a semi and brought it back. I then plopped it on my car and my car was flattened. *shrugs* That's okay, I was able to buy another car off of the local Mob. It's bullet-proof and everything...

Wait, I hear sirens! Me must go. Don't tell anyone what I just told you!

*runs*

Let's see, where to start...

God works in interesting ways. The other night I was praying about the problems we've had in the dorm and all the negativity that had resulted. I realized I had been extremely selfish and was giving that to God. Then, as my thoughts flittered hither and yon, lighting upon thoughts of the future, a thought that I wouldn't have invited into my head just dropped into my lap. "Why don't you apply to be an RA and try to help the college from the inside?" I smiled and dismissed it, 'cause I had decided to move into an apartment in the fall and that was that. I went on with my business, not thinking much of it. Then, I'm in the computer lab, talking to Brandon (Resident Director as well as Computer guy). Out of the blue he asks me if I wanted to apply for the RA position. Mentally I was hit by a 2x4. I stammered, "Yeah, I'm considering it." What else could I have said? *laughs* So I prayed about it that weekend and filled out the application yesterday. It's funny how God can get me all prepared for something (moving out) and then drops something like this in my lap.

I was thinking about it, and moving out would be completely selfish on my part. I have wanted to leave 'cause of the atmosphere and I've been reminded that before I leave, I have to do something to help it. So if God does open the door and I'm offered the RA position, I'll most likely accept and commit myself to serving the EBC guys. If not, I don't know if I'll move out, but I'll cross that bridge when I come to it.

God also provides in a big way. Saturday I helped a teacher move. It was an all day endeavor and I really enjoyed getting physical exercise. Sunday I drove to church, heard a small noise but didn't think anything of it. Got to church and really enjoyed the service. We worshiped God for the fact that He died for us and rose again. Very good, and very appropriate for the things I've been going through. Then I went to a park, laid in the sun for an hour and a half while reading my Psychology book, went back to the dorms, after a while I then went to Josh's dad's house. He and Cassy were doing laundry and I was able to do a load. At 8pm, we left the house. Cassy stopped to inform me that a headlight was out and we heard some more noise. Thinking it was just the fan, we went on. After the River Rd. exit, Cassy pulled over. I was rather confused 'cause it wasn't time to get off of Beltline. Well, after I stopped, I figured it out. Smoke was pouring from my engine. I got out in a hurry and took a look. All my liquid was draining out - quite a big puddle actually - and of course the engine was extremely hot. We were figuring out what to do when the flat bed tow truck showed up (probably radioed in by the highway patrol) and I decided to get a tow. Winched it up and drove back to the school. But get this, the amount that it cost was $40 for the truck, first 5 miles free, and $2 a mile after that. My teacher had given me $40 for helping (I almost refused it) and that paid for the majority of the $50 total. Does God provide or what! Cassy was very helpful (being a mechanic's daughter), they were able to give me a ride, and if they hadn't spotted the smoke, I could have lost the car. So God is very good.

I haven't figured out what the problem is, but Cassy and her dad (contacted via cell) think it is probably either a hose or the water pump. I'm not in a hurry to get it fixed 'cause for one, I have little mulah, and for two, I think God wants me to use my bike. *grins* Prayer would be appreciated.

Homework is going... okay. I'm getting all the reading and the assignments done on time, but Greek is causing me trouble. I've had a really hard time concentrating and even wanting to review. It's annoying, 'cause that's my favorite class. (BTW, Mr. B has finished his dissertation and passed with minor review! He's going to walk with the Seniors this June and get to graduate a Dr. Pretty cool.) I just finished reading Othello. I've got some questions to do and some critical reading of articles, but I'm doing good in that class. Small Group Dynamics is a really cool class. Ms. L. is a dynamic, humorous, and interesting teacher and I've really enjoyed my classes with her. Psychology is okay, I'm learning more from the book and the videos than from the teacher I'm sorry to say. He has good things to say, but is so soft spoken that I get easily distracted and have a hard time retaining what he says. Oh well, shall have to work harder on that.

I need to go job hunting, but now that the car is out of order, I'm not sure how that's going to work. Got some ideas though. There's two call centers that pay well that I'm going to try and find out about. The one I really want, the higher pay one, doesn't have a dress code or hair code from what I've heard so that's a positive thing. The other one is more strict and I'd have to get a haircut if I wanted to do that :(. We shall see what happens. I really want to get this hair out to 12 inches so that I can donate it, but it's taking longer than I want it to. Don't worry, pictures shall come soon!

Well, probably should go look at some bloggers and then clean as part of my work study. Homework then calls. adiso!

BTW, take a look at the new sidebar!

Interesting Article about looking for a soul mate.

I wrote this over the weekend on my laptop.
-----------
Friday – around 7ish.

This first week of school has been extremely busy. Having my brother here for the first part of the week, being involved in Element X Wed. and Thurs. and going to Shabbat tonight have all added up to demanding my attention. One of the reasons I didn’t post is ‘cause there’s been some negative happenings that occurred right after I returned. It was the subject of conversation for the next few days and I didn’t want to spread it onto here. Suffice it to say that some things that the school has done got our ire up. But it’s calmed down now and I’m just tired of that subject. So let’s take it from the top:

Registration – Monday: After getting in on Sunday afternoon and hanging around that evening, my brother slept in and I went to the chapel to register. No problems there because I knew exactly what classes I wanted to take and the actual signing up went fast. Waiting in line was boring, but it’s all part of the process. I’m taking 5 classes again this term: Beginning Greek III (4hrs), Small Group Dynamics (3hrs), Introduction to Literature II (3hrs), General Psychology (3hrs), and Learning Skills Enrichment (1PEhr). So far they look like good classes and I’ll be able to do well in all of them. I’ll be reading Everyman, Dante’s Inferno, Milton’s Paradise Lost, and Lewis’ The Great Divorce in Intro to Lit. I’m really looking forward to this class!

So after registration we ate and then ran some errands with Josh and Cassy. Got some books for Josh and got an expensive prescription for me. *sighs* I then worked on a Happy Birthday presentation for one of the maintenance guys on campus. Took about three or four hours to make a one and a half minute presentation. *laughs*

Well it’s time to head to Shabbat. I haven’t been all year and I wanted to go tonight ‘cause it’s Tony’s last one before he head’s back home. So this blogger entry will be composed of several installments on my laptop.

----
Later…

Shabbat was good. Shall tell of it when I get to Friday. Now onto the next day.

First day of classes – Tuesday: Went to Greek in the morning. I realized as we were going through some of the things we knew that I was a bit rusty. Must review. Then we had Chapel and David and I sat in the front row. The music part was good and then the speaker talked about something or other that I’m too tired to recall at the moment. David made the comment that this would be something that he would like at his college, though it won’t happen ‘cause Embry Riddle is a secular college. After class – General Psychology (going to be interesting. If I apply myself, I think I’ll be able to get an A.) – David and I just hung around for most of the afternoon. I talked to various people that I needed to talk to and even tried a little homework (didn’t work). Then, around 6:30 or so, we went to the Eugene Hilton to set up the projector and get ready for the surprise birthday party. It worked quite well and the presentation went without a hitch. I was impressed! *pats self on back* Then we got back and I talked to my mother briefly to touch bases with them (they had traveled over the mountains and were staying at a motel for the night – kinda a vacation for them). After that we went into the Student Center and watched Monty Python and the Search for the Holy Grail. Very good movie. I liked it much better than the Meaning of Life (thumbs down). What was funny is that I literally knew the movie from the many people in my life who have quoted it word for word. I was quoting scenes and I hadn’t seen the movie before! *grins big*

*yawns* Well, it’s already Saturday, so I’m going to go to bed and try and finish this up tomorrow. Who knows when it’ll get posted…

4/3/2004 12:11 PM

I woke up just a little while ago and decided I’d write some more in this before I start homework.

Second day of classes – Wednesday: I’m thinking I’m going to like Wednesdays ‘cause I don’t have a second period class that day and it will allow me to sleep in a bit. So I got up, went to Small Group and found out that we lost two and gained one member. Randy seems cool. So then I had the class Small Group Dynamics and really enjoyed it. The teacher is Ms. L. and she’s one of my favorite teachers. Next class was Intro to Lit and I got the syllabus for that. Reading is going to be heavy this term, but I’m thinking the projects won’t be too hard. After class, David and I went to Elmer’s out in Springfield. We were going to meet Mom and Dad there and also my Great-Uncle and Aunt. I must say that it’s a good thing I have a cell phone ‘cause I had to direct the parent’s to Elmer’s. Even with the turn-arounds they had, we got to Elmer’s at the same time. That lunch went well. Good conversation and good food. I had a crispy chicken salad that was very tasty. We said good bye and then I headed back to the college intending on getting some homework done. It didn’t happen. I sat in my rocking chair which happened to be in the sunshine and fell asleep. Since I had a headache, I was glad to sleep.

I had Element X practice at 4:30, so I went to that and dinner. We then practiced the games we had decided to do for the youth group. The Bridge YG started at around 7:30 and we were the entire hour. It was fun and the youth did get involved. I was happy.

I then tried to do my Psychology homework when I got back. I got about 20 pages or so into the 60 page reading and decided that at 12am that I was too tired to continue. I woke up early enough to be able to continue it on Thursday morning.

Thursday – This day was actually more to routine than the rest of the day. Woke up, did my Psych homework and went to Chapel and class. Then I did homework in the afternoon and went to Element X in the evening (regular practice is on Thursday nights).

Friday – Well, classes in the morning, afternoon was hanging out and homework. Not to mention starting this blog entry. I then went to Shabbat (This one is a Messianic Jewish Sabbath celebration) out on Riverloop. It was more fun than I expected. Last year when I participated here on campus, Travis focused more on the serious side and it didn’t really seem to be much of a celebration of God. This time, though, it was much more relaxed and touched me. Let’s see if I can describe it…

We’ve got the challa (pronounce HAL – la) bread, the salt, the bowl of water, and the Shabbat candles on the table. It starts with the woman lighting the candles, Remembrance and Observance, and then inviting the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit in. After that we sung three Hebrew songs (read – tried to sing and hummed). The bowl of water was then used to wash our hands and symbolized washing our hearts from the cares of the week and giving up the sin to God. Then we had the cup of joy which symbolized several things – Jesus’ blood being one of them – being prayed over. Then the bread (More symbolism – Manna, Jesus’ body, and some others which I can’t remember) was prayed over. The salt symbolized covenant (The ancients would make a covenant and exchange salt from their salt pouches and unless you could separate the salt grains out, the covenant couldn’t be broken.) and we dipped our pieces of bread in it (very good tasting btw). Then we ate a very good meal!

After that, they played some Hebrew songs on the CD player and we danced. Yes, I danced a Jewish dance. Twas interesting. I did okay when it went slow, but when it sped up I had problems. Sitting there after trying two dances and watching them dance, I was reminded of how dance is a part of worship. I could tell that they were most definitely worshiping God through the dances. All in all, it was a very good experience and I am thinking about going back when I can.

So that brings me to today. I’m going to sit down and hit the books. I want to try and get all my homework done today so that tomorrow can be a day of rest and I can hang out with church people. Don’t know when this will be posted, but you should be happy. It’s a very long update! *laughs*
