I've been focusing on my western civ course today. I read two chapters in the main textbook about the Roman Republic and Empire. Then I read Cruelty and Civilization. This book is about the gladiators and the place the games had in Roman civilization. It was such a part of their lives. Each sity if they could afford it, had some sort of games. One of the more interesting things was that the charioteers were divided into four factions (there were more, but they didn't last long). These factions had fights (mob action), but the interesting thing is that prominent citizens curried favor with the side that they cheered for. Political favor.

Anyways, the whole thing made me think about the similarity between our society wanting to be entertained and the Roman society being entertained. TV permiates our society; the games permiated Roman society. It's an escape from daily life. The Romans crowded into the Coliseum to see fights to the death, execution of criminals, and the wild animals tear eachother and humans to pieces. We sit down and watch CSI which deals with death and graphic murder; we watch Survivor which is all about backstabbing and breaking trust; we get fanatical about sports and which team is the best. It's something interesting to think about...

Okay, no one answered my question in the last post. Here it is again: Here’s a question that occurred to me as I was studying Theology: Assuming the Bottomless Pit is truly bottomless and the normal laws of physics apply, how fast will Satan be traveling at the end of a thousand years? So, can any of my friends or relatives answer that?
