Summer 1997 after returning from a week at camp
Man, my eyes are doing some weird things. Dr. Birch has me on RGP contacts and when I don't wear them, my vision is bad. In fact, I was playing Asteroids and I could see two ships. It was almost a blurring... Strange...
Spring 1998
Vision is getting worse. I'm having a hard time wearing my contacts and when I don't wear them, it's like the horizon stretches. I'm finding it really hard to describe what I'm seeing to the eye doctor here in Jerome.
Summer of 1998
Dr. Davis has finally figured out what I have. Keratoconus is the disease. Apparently my corneas are cone shaped, like the end of a football, instead of smooth and rounded, like the side. What tipped him off was my saying that I saw two "boxes" when he was examining me. We went up to Ketchum and they used a machine called a "corneal topographical mapper" to take pictures of the surface. My left eye was very difficult to get a fix on and they said it was the worst one. I believe it, 'cause I've always had worse vision on that side.
Fall/Winter of 1998
I've been trying to wear contacts, but it's really hard. My eyes don't like them, even though I do.
I went to England for 6 weeks and I really noticed my bad eyes trying to read train departures and etc. I really want to see!!
January through August 1999
Contact wear has been off and on. Sometimes my eyes don't hurt and sometimes they do. I've had a few near catastrophes when I almost lost a contact. I think I'm giving my parents a few heart attacks.
We moved the end of August and that drive up to WA was the last time I have worn my contacts. The left contact, and the right, both are getting unbearable. I hope we can find an eye doc soon.
