January 2002

It is a new year and my contacts aren't giving me too much trouble. The last time I replaced my right contact was around a year ago and it's been pretty good. I get it polished occaisionally to get that protein build up off. It works and my eye is more comfortable.

We have an appointment for February 11th at Dr. Coleman's office. I wonder what she shall say when she sees my eyes....

February 11th, 2002

Well, we went to Dr. Coleman's today. The technician tried to get a refraction on my left eye and it didn't work. She even tried the autorefractor and it wasn't able to get a reading. I love my eye...

Dr. Coleman took a look at my left eye and said that it was time to be thinking about a cornea transplant. That was both a shock and a relief! We had been told before, that we would have to wait until I was 20 or 21 before the procedure could be done. Dr. Coleman said that my eye was at the point that it would be much better for me to have the transplant.

I have to say the thought makes me a little nervous, but not too much. God will take care of me and guide us through.

We made an appointment at Dr. Terry's (the eye surgeon in Portland) for a consultation. That will be in March.

From my blogger:

I'm baaaaack!

Yeah, I know, I wasn't gone that long, but I love saying that! (er.. typing that..)

We woke up way too early, 4:30, and left at 5:19 or so. Got there just a few minutes before my appointment. Dr. Terry had a corneal map done. That wasn't anything all that different, 'cause I had had (that still looks weird, having two words side by side...) that done when I was first diagnosed with Kerataconas. Just confirmed what I already knew... My left cornea is a mountain! *grins*

Dr. Terry looked at both eyes and basically agreed with the opthmoligist. I suppose I really should learn how to spell that.... I do need a cornea transplant, in both eyes, though they do the worst eye first, and there's a year between eyes. He told us the basics and gave us the low-down.

Now it's just to find out the coverage that Dad's insurance will pay, and what mine will. I have no clue when I'll have it.

From my blogger:

I hate thinking about finances -- makes my head hurt!

We've been working on two financial obstacles lately. The first one is the FAFSA. Not having the time, it has taken for ever to get submitted. We finally got all the info in last night, and it timed out on Dad! *growls* So I had to submit it today. At least it's submitted... It is still not processed yet, because Dad needs to submit his electronic signature by way of a PIN, but we haven't received it yet. So he'll have to do that before we find out how much money I get...

The second thing is financing for my corneal transplant. Turns out that when I get insured under my policy, I won't get the money for it. Some sort of pre-existing thing. So, since I am covered under Dad's insurance, we scheduled the surgery for March 26th - which is before my insurance comes into play.

Now to figure out the Medical leave. I don't know exactly how long I'll need off, but I hope that we'll figure that out soon.

My wish came through though. I'm getting the surgery as early as possible and should be recovered by summmer! Yay! I think I'll have a better summer, being that I'll see better...

For those of you who read this, I would ask for your prayers. All this stuff is confusing and I get overwhelmed. Thanks.
